     This work presents the updated content of current European private international law. It is, in fact, a book of law written by several authors from Spain and Italy: professors Alfonso-Luis Calvo Caravaca, Javier Carrascosa González, Silvia Marino, María Asunción Cebrián Salvat and Isabel Lorente Martínez.

     This book, in its second edition, is intended for anyone interested in studying and learning about the private international law system of the European Union. In this sense, it attempts to clearly explain the fundamental structures of this fascinating branch of law as well as to convey a series of interesting, intuitive, constructive and brilliant ideas that may set the course for the future.

     The book includes beautiful artwork by illustrator Alessandro Sánchez Pennaroli, which helps to convey some of the key ideas contained in each chapter.

     The authors would like to thank Umberta Pennaroli for the meticulous revision and translation into English of this work during the four years of its production. Special mention is also due to Silvia Marino, Professor of European Union Law at the Università dell'Insubria (Italy), who enthusiastically accepted to participate in this hazardous but also fascinating project. Many thanks also to Brian Mc Menamin for all his wise teachings on life and on the English language.

     Where we are going we don't need roads, said Doc Brown in the movie "Back to the Future". Europe is moving towards a freer society. To achieve a freer world and a freer Europe we do not need roads: we need European private international law. This book is, in short, a hymn to freedom for Europe and to freedom for all people.

The exam will be as follows:



- 27 questions both theoretical and practical multiple choice system. With 13 correct answers the test is passed. Incorrect answers do not penalize. Maximum mark is 9,00 points out of 9,00.



- Only for those who apply: one optional oral dissertation based on FOUR judgments dealing with European private international law. There is a list of 40 judgments. The students will be asked two of the "modern judgments" and two corresponding to the oldies but goldies" judgments, at their choice. Maximum mark is 1,00 point out of 1,00. For the students to apply it is needed to have passed the multiple choice exam.

Students should prepare a short personal dossier on each of the Common Law institutions (listed below) including:



(1) - Concept, characters and legal regulation of the institution in Common Law.

(2) - The legal function performed by the institution.

(3) - Reactions to those institutions by Civil Law systems, especially European and Spanish case law.

(4) - The most representative and important judgments rendered by Spanish and European courts on any single legal institution: the leading cases.

(5) - Personal opinion on the advisability of introducing a specific Common Law legal institution into European and Spanish law.



- During two weeks of class, the lecturers will ask questions to all students about any of the Common Law legal institutions under study. All are invited to participate in the legal debate. All contributions will be marked.



- You do not need to hand in your personal dossier at the end of the class. The personal dossier will be used to prepare the presentations during the last week of class.
